Il progetto “One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)” e Microsoft Corp stanno lavorando insieme per sviluppare un sistema dual-boot capace di supportare sia Linux che Windows. Sembra che l’OLPC stia lavorando anche con la fondazione “Bill & Melinda Gates” per implementare diversi programmi educativi all’interno dei PC destinati ai bambini dei paesi in via di sviluppo.

“We are working with them very closely to make a dual-boot system so that, like on an Apple, you can boot either one up. The version that’s up and running of Windows on the XO is very fast, it’s very, very successful. We’re working very hard to do both,”

“Microsoft has embraced the open-source community over the past few years in a very different way than before, and that really helps, because it’s become a little bit less religious than it was a few years ago and that’s really good. In the end, I think, the more people that have software and hardware out there, the better.”

All’interno dell’articolo di ComputerWorld viene posta fine alla speculazione più in voga degli ultimi mesi, non verranno prodotti PC che offrono versioni custom di Linux e versioni Custom di Windows, verrà prodotto un PC dual-boot per essere maggiormente competitivi. Ricordano oltretutto che Asustek Computer ha già commercializzato un laptop low cost che supporta Windows XP

Il progetto OLPC è nato come Idea di realizzare un PC Low Cost che non superi i 100$, sebbene in tanti continuino ad associare il progetto alla realizzazione di un PC da 100$ bisogna dire che vi è poco di vero, il PC è stato commercializzato ma ad un costo che supera i 200$ per unità.
Obbiettivo del progetto OLPC è avvicinare chiunque al mondo dell’Informatica, specialmente le popolazioni più povere, quelle che vivono nei Paesi in Via di Sviluppo.
