Windows Live OneCare è destinato a soccombere, le sottoscrizioni saranno attive fino al 30 giugno 2009 ed il suo successore sarà un Antivirus Free. Il nuovo Antivirus Free disponibile per i sistemi operativi Windows è creato dalla stessa Microsoft,  è in fase di sviluppo con nome in codice di Morro e sta venendo costruito partendo dal “Microsoft’s malware protection engine” . Il futuro Antivirus creato da Microsoft fornirà agli utenti una protezione enterprise contro i virus, spyware, rootkit e trojan, ma non andrà ad includere tutte le funzionalità di protezione offerte dai suoi competitors in materia di sicurezza.

“Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously,” – Amy Barzdukas (senior director degli Online Services e della Divisione Windows presso la Microsoft. “This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.”

“Morro” utilizzerà la stessa tecnologia anti-malware che accompagna i prodotti per la sicurezza di Microsoft i quali hanno già ricevuto il VB100 award da Virus Bulletin ma anche la Certificazione Checkmark dei West Coast Labs olter che dagli International Computer Security Association Labs. Microsoft promette che “Morro” sarà in grado di fornire protezione senza alzare il consumo di risorse del PC e aiutando gli utenti ad essere protetti contro le minacce online.

“Because uptake of standard anti-malware is low around the world, particularly in developing nations, the availability of basic protection for anyone who wants it is all the more important,” – Roger Kay (fondatore e presidente di Endpoint Technologies Associates) “By offering such basic protection at no charge to the consumer, Microsoft is promoting a safer environment for PCs, service providers and e-commerce itself, since it is through unprotected PCs that the worst threats are introduced to the system as a whole.”

“Windows Morro Antivirus” è atteso per la seconda metà del 2009 e verrà rilasciato come download stand-alone per Windows XP, Windows Vista e Windows 7. Utilizzando Morro con le migliorie apportate a Windows ed Internet Explorer, l’utente avrà in mano una soluizione robusta e gratuita con cui difendere il proprio PC dalle minacce online e offline.
