In seguito alla procedura di investigazione dell’UE mossa dalla richiesta di accertamenti redatta da Opera Software, è stato comunicato quest’oggi l’invio di una dichiarazione a Microsoft dove la si accusa di tentare illecitimamente di conglobare Internet Explorer all’interno del sistema operativo Windows. La richiesta di Opera all’UE risale al Dicembre del 2007, un documento consegnato all’Unione Europea in cui si accusa la Microsoft di posizione dominante nel mercato dei sistemi operativi ma anche di pratiche illecite per cercare di dare “maggior spazio a Internet Explorer” rispetto gli altri Browser.

Ecco cosa ha detto al riguardo il CEO di Opera Jon von Tetzchner:

“On behalf of all Internet users, we commend the Commission for taking the next step towards restoring competition in a market that Microsoft has strangled for more than a decade. The Commission’s Statement of Objections demonstrates that the Commission is serious about getting Microsoft to start competing on the merits in the browser market and letting consumers have a real choice of internet browsers”.

Le dichiarazioni dell’UE vengono quasi dopo un anno e mezzo dalla sentenza del tribunale Europeo di prima istanza quando confermavano la decisione del 2004, che Microsoft integrava illegamente Windows Media Player all’interno del sistema operativo Windows.

Ecco cosa ha detto al riguardo Jason Hoida di Opera Software:

“The Court of First Instance’s judgment was clear that Microsoft illegally tied Media Player to Windows. We are not surprised that the Commission has issued a Statement of Objections based on the principles in that judgment. We are confident that the Commission will ultimately conclude that Microsoft has violated European competition law again and that it will take all necessary actions to restore competition and consumer choice in this important market”.

von Tetzchner (Ceo di Opera Software) ha ulteriori dichiarazioni sulla Microsoft, dice che il giudizio viene emesso in un momento particolare ora che il Browser è diventato uno strumento fondamenentale, forse il software più importante di un intero PC.

“The browser is the consumer’s gateway to the Internet and a critical platform for application development itself. Today the Commission has confirmed that it will do what it can to make sure consumers are able to continue to freely enjoy one of the most important innovations in the history of humanity: the Internet”
