Un nuovo post di Google rivela che cesserà il supporto di Google Apps per i Browser Obsoleti. L’annuncio di Google è un chiaro messaggio indirizzato a Internet Explorer 6, non è più un “ospite gradito”.
Il messaggio è chiaro, Google lo sta diramando agli admin di Google Apps ma anche tramite il proprio Blog per informare che cesserà di supportare in Google Apps i Browser legacy. Non vi è nulla di cosi’ allarmante nel messaggio di Google se non fosse che Internet Explorer 6 mantiene ancora una discreta quota di mercato. Inevitabile il da farsi, aggiornare Internet Explorer 6 (almeno) a Internet Explorer 7 oppure decidere il “grande passo”, effettuare uno switch a Firefox 3.0, Google Chrome 4.0, Safari 3.0 ma anche Opera.
La News è interessante, la decisione di Google significa un accelerazione per l’inclusione di nuove caratteristiche in Google Apps aumentando oltretutto le performance di caricamento degli applicativi che sono ottimi ma non ancora “eccezionali”. Google non nasconde inoltre che il 2010 – 2011 sono anni importanti per lo sviluppo di Google Docs che ricordiamo, potrebbe costituire un “problema” (per ora teorico) al MS Office 2010 Free. Abbandonare IE6 non può dar altro che benefici, l’inclusione veloce di nuove caratteristiche che non dovranno più “temere” la retrocompatibilità con IE6.
Ecco l’email in cui Google avvisa della novità:
Dear Google Apps admin,
In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.
We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.
Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.
Starting next week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.
