Gli spammer si nascondono dietro ad una manciata di Registrar
Una nuova ricerca i cui dati provengono da un analisi effettuata da Knujon (un impresa la cui finalità è convincere i Domain Name Registrar a far chiudere i siti di Spam) è stata eseguita su milioni di messaggi di junk (spam) del 2007 e si è arrivati alla conclusione che più di tre quarti di tutti i Siti Web di cui viene fatta pubblicità attraverso lo Spam sia raggruppato ad appena 10 Domain Name Registrars (compagnie ). Garth Bruen, co-fondatore di Knujon ha detto che i messaggi di Spam collegati a false farmacie, software piratato e istituti di credito fasulli si riferiscono sempre a Siti Web che altro non sono un minuscolo insieme di siti sotto il controllo di un piccolo numero di aziende.Garth Bruen si prodiga a richiamare l’attenzione informando che gli Spammer inseriscono informazioni false nei record WHOIS (la directory globale con cui si scopre a chi è intestato un dominio).L’ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) obbliga tutti i Web domain registrars a mantenere dei WHOIS accurati, stando al contratto con l’ICANN i registrars sono inoltre obbligati a cancellare tutti i Domini per cui vengono fornite informazione false o inaccurate entro un tempo massimo di 15 giorni. Dovrebbe sorprendere che nessun spammer fornisca dei dati veri quando registra un nuovo sito ma ciò per cui c’è ancor più da sorprendersi è che solo un paio di registrar vigilino sui records WHOIS e che qualora lo facciano, ciò avviene solo attraverso un rudimentale check per verificare che le informazioni siano accurate. Bruen ha affermato di recente che l’ICANN ha fatto poco per prevenire questo “malcostume”:
“ICANN doesn’t have any authority or mandate to deal with spam or Internet abuse, but it does have a mandate to make sure the WHOIS records are accurate,” Bruen said. “A lot of our work has focused on what’s clearly within ICANN’s management and what’s in the registrar’s contractual agreement with ICANN. And ICANN doesn’t like the fact that they’re being forced to comply with their own standards by third parties.”
Nei mesi trascorsi Knujon ha inviato cosi’ tante lamentele automatizzate ai registrars che ha fatto crashare più volte il database dell’ ICANN. Bruen ha anche tentato d’avvisare i responsabili dell’ICANN sullo stato del database ma non vi è stato niente da fare.
“The absurd thing about this is I flew out there in June and said ‘Here’s the direction we’re heading in with Knujon, and from what I can tell, your database can’t handle what we have to submit’,”
L’ICANN sembra essere a conoscenza di quanto sia accaduto poichè in una newsletter ha ammesso il crash citando anche Knujon come il responsabile del 40% di tutte le segnalazioni che ricevono.
